  1. Compatibility Notes/FAQ

  3. My modem does not respond when I use SerialSpeed. What do I do?
  4.  
  5. First, make sure your modem supports 115Kbps or 230Kbps operation. If 
  6. SerialSpeed 230 is set to 230Kbps, try changing the port speed to 115Kbps. This will 
  7. fix the problem in many cases.
  8.  
  9. Second, check to see if your hardware and software are compatible with 
  10. SerialSpeed 230. See the categories below for more information.
  11.  
  12. Third, make sure your communication settings are correct. 
  13.  
  14. Fourth, try different software (such as products on the ﾒknown workingﾓ list. below.)

  16. What Macintosh models are known to work with SerialSpeed 230?
  17.  
  18. Any Macintosh that can support the GeoPort Modem, can also use the DMA Serial Driver
  19. and is compatible with SerialSpeed 230. Here is the most up-to-date list of compatible Macintosh
  20. models that we have. Clone models based on these motherboard designs should work also
  21. (i.e. Power Computing Power 100 series)

  24. Power Macintosh 6100, 7100, 7200, 7500, 7600, 8100, 8500, 9500

  26. Some Macintosh Performa models will work if they are based on the same design as a Power Macintosh listed above - check your manual for details. If they support GeoPort, they will support SerialSpeed 230.

  29. What Macintosh models do not work?

  31. Power Macintosh (Performa) 5200
  32. Power Macintosh (Performa) 6200
  33. Powerbook 190, 2300, 5300 series

  35. The above Power Macintosh and PowerBook computers do not have the 
  36. DMA serial ports and cannot use SerialSpeed 230.

  38. If your Macintosh is not a Power Macintosh and is not an ﾒAVﾓ model, it will 
  39. not work. Even if you have a PowerMac upgrade board, it will not work. This 
  40. is because the upgrade cards do not contain new serial port chips.

  61. Should I install SerialDMA 2.0.2?

  63. Only if you are running System 7.5.2 or earlier system software.
  64. SerialDMA 2.0.2 is included as part of System 7.5.3 and later versions.

  66. The original serial driver for these products suffered from occasional system 
  67. hangs, communications timeouts, poor communications performance, and various 
  68. other glitches. The new SerialDMA 2.0.2 driver corrects these problems and 
  69. provides the targeted products with a serial driver that should exceed the 
  70. performance and reliability standards for serial communications on the 
  71. Macintosh platform.

  74. Will SerialSpeed 230 work with my GeoPort?

  80. Why won't SerialSpeed 230 work with my SupraFAXModem 288?

  82. It will. But you must use SerialSpeed at 115Kbps, not 230Kbps. This modem 
  83. does not support 230Kbps operation.

  85. Will SerialSpeed 230 accelerate programs that use the 
  86. Communications Toolbox drivers?
  87.  
  88. Yes, but make sure you are using SerialDMA 2.0.2 or System 7.5.3.

  90. What are the limitations of the Printer Port?
  91.  
  92. Apple documentation states that the printer port is handled at a lower 
  93. priority than the modem port (i.e. incoming data is handled first from the 
  94. modem port) so high speed operation on the printer port is more risky. 
  95.  
  96. Furthermore, documentation for the Quadra 840AV/660AV states that DMA 
  97. operation is not enabled for receiving information on the printer port. In 
  98. contrast, Power Macintosh computers have full DMA support on both the 
  99. modem and printer ports.

  101. If you have the option, you should use your modem port for high speed 
  102. operation instead of your printer port. On the other hand, I have heard many 
  103. success stories of individuals who are using their printer ports at 230Kbps 
  104. speed every day, with no problems. So it's certainly worth trying.

  106. Can I use SerialSpeed 230 to speed up my serial printer?
  107.  
  108. Probably not, but it canﾕt hurt to try. Apple printers and Epson Stylus Color Pro
  109. printers can operate at 230Kbps, but Appleﾕs serial printers already use 
  110. 230Kbps serial transfers, so SerialSpeed wonﾕt speed them up any further. 
  111. If you have an Epson Stylus Color Pro printer, SerialSpeed 230 should give you
  112. a performance boost.

  114. What is the ﾒDMA Serial Driverﾓ and why do I need it?
  115.  
  116. Since the first Macintosh, the serial ports have used an interrupt-driven serial 
  117. driver. This driver takes valuable CPU time to handle every character that is 
  118. received or sent through the serial ports. At high speeds, the interrupt-driven 
  119. serial driver gets completely swamped and starts to lose information. 
  120. 57.6Kbps is about the best you can do with the interrupt-driven serial driver 
  121. for bidirectional data transfers (the kind you use with modem programs.) You 
  122. can go to 230Kbps in one direction (send) but not receive. That is what the 
  123. Apple printer drivers do, because youﾕre mostly sending data to a printer. But 
  124. it wonﾕt work for a modem because you often use it to receive data.
  125.  
  126. The AppleTalk drivers achieve 230Kbps on all Macintoshes because they 
  127. completely take over your computer when they are running, something that 
  128. a modem program cannot do. They are ﾒsynchronous driversﾓ as opposed to 
  129. the ﾒasynchronousﾓ drivers used by modem programs.
  130.  
  131. The DMA serial driver makes use of special, improved hardware present on 
  132. the ﾒAVﾓ and most Power Macintoshes. This hardware allows information to 
  133. flow straight from the serial ports into memory with little or no work on the 
  134. CPUﾕs part. This means that the serial ports can support much higher speeds 
  135. in both directions, such as 115Kbps or 230Kbps. Hooray!

  137. Will they ever release a DMA Serial Driver for my older Mac?
  138.  
  139. No, because your serial port hardware does not support DMA transfers. The 
  140. Mac IIfx does support DMA transfers, but it is unlikely that Apple will 
  141. attempt to support this discontinued model in a future software release. 
  142. Apple promises a new serial port driver architecture as part of their next-
  143. generation system software (Copland)  Will it work on your Mac? Your guess 
  144. is as good as mine...

  147. I can force SerialSpeed 230 to load on my older Mac by turning off 
  148. the "Check serial driver at startup" option. Why shouldn't I do this?
  149.  
  150. If you happen to have a printer that supports 115Kbps operation or 230Kbps 
  151. operation, then SerialSpeed 230 may work to speed up your printer, even if 
  152. you have an older Mac. 
  153.  
  154. But for all the reasons stated above, Brookline Software will not provide any 
  155. support to users who insist on using SerialSpeed and modems on their older, 
  156. non-DMA serial driver Macs. If you try it, it'll appear to work... until you try 
  157. receiving large quantities of data. For example, the first time you try a 
  158. ZMODEM receive. Then you'll get tons of garbage and the transfer will fail.

  160. My communications software has built-in support for 115Kbps and 
  161. 230Kbps. Do I need SerialSpeed?
  162.  
  163. Not for those products. For example, ZTerm 1.0b3 and newer versions of 
  164. FreePPP 2.5 have built-in support for these higher speeds. SerialSpeed 230 will 
  165. coexist happily with these programs, and won't harm their operation. 
  166. SerialSpeed is primarily useful for programs that do not have built-in support 
  167. for 230Kbps or 115Kbps operation.
